Drum Frame
- Diameter: Measured from corner to corner – sizes 30-55cm (This measurement may vary slightly as each frame is individually handmade)
- Frame height: 7cm
- Frame thickness: 1.2 cm
- Wood: spruce (locally felled, carefully dried)
- Corner number: 8
Every frame begins its life right here, in our workshop, crafted by our hands from native spruce. We select timber felled from the surrounding forests, then patiently air-dry it for years to achieve perfect stability and resonant quality.
When we can, we offer something even more special: frames made from rustic, reclaimed wood. These pieces carry a unique history, often showing characterful traces like worm marks that speak of their past. This wood is not only technically superb and fully seasoned—it is decades old. You can be certain that nothing inhabits it; only the silent, enduring spirit of the wood remains.
The Symbolism of the Drum Frame Shape
The shape for the frame drum was chosen by us for a reason: On the one hand, this shape is extremely practical – during long shamanic rituals, the shaman can change the handle at the edges. In addition, the corners create additional acoustics, which makes the sound sharper, which is important in trance rituals.
In addition, the number 8 has a deep meaning in many cultures and spiritual practices, including shamanism. Mongolian shamans, for example, distinguish eight cardinal directions (north, south, west, east and the intermediate directions). The number 8 is also associated with the so-called “Eightfold Path” of salvation, which Buddhist shamans report: This path of Buddha led to enlightenment and the exit from samsara.
The octagon unites circle (sky) and square (earth) and thus symbolizes the connection between the worlds.
Drumhead
- The drumhead is cut 25 cm larger in diameter than the drum frame
- We deliver it in a round-shaped blank
- The drumhead made of natural rawhide
Crafted in Germany by a family of master tanners, guardians of a 200-year legacy. Using only natural methods, unchanged for centuries . no modern chemicals.
Rawhide Strips
- For the smallest diameter (30 cm), an 8-m rawhide strip is used. The strip lengh increases proportionally with the frame diameter, so we add approximately 1 meter of strip for each larger frame size.
– 30 cm frame: 8 m
– 35 cm frame: 9 m
– 40 cm frame: 10 m, etc. - The strips are made from the rawhide of the same animal used for the drumhead. If not in stock, we use bullhide with natural scarring.
Everyone has their own technique for building a drum. That’s why we’ve been generous with the dimensions of the rawhides.
Some prefer to have the hide folded far over the frame. Others like it to sit just over the edge. The beauty is, you can always trim it down. The same goes for strips: you can manage with a little cord or use more. With extra length, you can even incorporate beautiful knot work.
For custom sizes — whether for the rawhide or the drum frame — we can assemble an individual drum-building kit just for you. Simply send your request to us by email.
