Rawhide for the Drumhead:
Horse
Considered the benchmark for many traditional drums, especially in Siberian and Central Asian shamanism. Suitable for powerful, rhythmic playing.
Sound: Very loud, rich, with a wealth of overtones. Produces a long, “soaring” sound with a pronounced low-frequency component. The sound is deep and “cosmic.”
Bull
Extremely durable. Often used for large shamanic drums and concert bass drums. Very thick and heavy, requiring significant effort to play and stretch. The resulting drum is heavy.
Sound: The loudest and lowest of the common options. The sound is very powerful, “impactful,” with an emphasis on the fundamental tone, but with fewer overtones than horse. Ideal for large ritual drums where the physical tangibility of the sound is needed.
Deer
Responsive, bright sound. The rawhide holds sacred significance for the peoples of the North.
Sound: Warm, soft, melodious, and yet quite strong. The sound is less aggressive than bull or horse, with a clear and pure tone.
Goat
Responds easily to a light touch. Ideal for fast rhythms and the use of multiple techniques. Lightweight, so a drum made from goat rawhide is well-suited for women.
Sound: High and dry. Clear, focused, with pronounced mid-frequencies. Short sustain (sound duration), but good attack.
Wild Boar
Stiff, requires good stretching and a strong hand. Due to its stiffness, it can be fastidious to tune but produces an absolutely unique sound.
Sound: Very characteristic, rough, with a rasp and a large number of overtones. The sound is gritty, “earthy,” powerful, but not as low as the sound of the bull rawhide. Creates a feeling of antiquity and strength.
Drum Shape
Round
Benchmark Sound: The instrument sounds maximally authentic and predictable. The sound wave spreads evenly from the center in all directions, creating a pure, focused timbre.
Stable Sustain: Vibrations are distributed evenly across the membrane, promoting a smooth and prolonged sound.
Symbolism: Wholeness, the Sun, the cycle, unity. This is the traditional, sacred form for many cultures.
Octagonal
More Complex Timbre: The corners slightly disrupt the even distribution of vibrations, which can add a subtle, barely perceptible “buzzing” component to the sound or make the attack slightly sharper.
Shorter Sustain: Due to the presence of corners and more complex geometry, vibrations may fade slightly faster than in a perfectly round drum.
Symbolism: Harmony of the universe, balance (like a mandala). The octagon is often associated with the transition between heaven (circle) and earth (square).
Frame Wall Thickness
Thin Walls
- Lightweight
- High responsiveness — requires less effort to produce a loud sound
- Bright, “melodic” sound with pronounced sustain
- Relative fragility
Thick Walls
- Noticeable weight
- Less responsive — more force is needed for loud playing
- Sound is drier, more focused, and more attacked. Energy goes into the membrane, not into vibrating the frame
- Increased strength and durability
Drum Diameter
Medium (50-60 cm)
- Balanced sound: possesses both low overtones and a bright timbre
- Universal sustain
- The most common and convenient size for most people
Suitable for most musical styles and ensemble playing; the ideal option for beginners — allows for learning all basic techniques.
When played, the sound is felt in the abdomen and solar plexus.
Large (65 cm and more)
- Low, deep, “droning” sound with rich overtones
- Long sustain (the sound vibrates for a long time)
- The feeling of a powerful, “shamanic” backdrop
- Noticeable weight, requires playing skill
A drum for experienced performers. Holds the bass line in an ensemble. Used for creating atmosphere, immersion into a meditative state.
During play, the sound is felt in the lower part of the body.
Every detail influences the character of your future shamanic drum
