How Can Birch Bark Be Used?

Birch bark is a unique natural material valued for its strength, flexibility, antiseptic properties, and decorative beauty. It is suitable both for professional workshops and for home crafting.

Origin and Environmental Sustainability

Our birch bark comes from the northern regions of Eastern Europe. There it is harvested by hand, stripping the bark from living trees. With proper technique, this does not harm the tree – after 3–5 years, the bark fully regrows, and the same tree can be used several times. Some of the material also comes from already fallen trees.

Unlike Western Europe, where birch is mostly used as firewood or for furniture production, in Eastern Europe it is valued both as a material for carving and as a source of birch bark. And importantly: the harvesting of birch bark in the regions from which we source it is under strict control, so our bark is a product from people who care about the health of our planet.

The birch has another remarkable property: it not only quickly regenerates its bark but also grows very quickly itself – even in harsh climatic conditions. This is precisely why birch bark can rightly be considered an eco-friendly and renewable natural material.

 

The Layers of Birch Bark – What’s the Difference?

Inner Layer (Bast)

The inner layer of birch bark is always processed depending on the intended use. After removing the outer white layer, we either make the bark very thin (ideal for surface decoration, making birch-bark strips, etc.) or deliberately leave it thicker if the future product that may need more stability.

 

Properties of the bast:

• Thanks to natural resins and tannins, the bark is resistant to mold, rot, and other types of biological decomposition
• The bark warms up quickly from the heat of your hands and from sunlight and has pleasant tactile properties – holding a birch-bark product in your hands is like touching the warmth of nature, as if you were holding a piece of the Sun
• Birch-bark products are generally lightweight, which makes them easy to handle

 

Outer Layer

The outer side of birch bark is the familiar white-and-black surface with the distinctive pattern that many people picture when they hear the word “birch.” This is precisely what makes this material so popular in decorative and applied arts, interior design, and crafts.

The outer layer is often used in the following types of creative work:

• Painting: acrylic, ink, and oil adhere perfectly
• Pyrography: produces clear graphic lines and contrasting patterns

Dear friends, since mid-2024, a new customs duty rate on birch bark of 50% of the value has been in effect. This is a pan-European regulation that has affected all importers. We tried to keep our previous prices as long as possible, but now we are forced to reflect this duty in the product price. Thank you for your trust and understanding of the current situation.
