Made by us and in Germany. A noble piece, be it a fishing rod, knife, cutlery or door handle, needs a noble handle made of high-quality material. Our birch bark handle blanks are just the thing! A handle made of birch bark slices are not only very beautiful, but also robust, pleasant to the hand and is always unique in its grain.
Property
Comfortable and soft in the hand. The more often you hold the object by the birch bark handle, the more comfortable the grip becomes.
Finishing the handle
Should be done by you. This allows you to adapt the birch handle individually and ergonomically to your hand.
The production of a birch bark handle is analogous to the process of making a knife handle from leather. Slices of the same size are cut from the material and glued together to form blocks, which are then processed as knife handle, door handle or fishing handle blanks. This knowledge is ancient and handles made of birch bark were often made in the Scandinavian and Slavic areas. At that time, glue was not always available. So they were partially inserted and the discs were fixed by gripping them in bone ends. The higher-quality handles were glued in the Middle Ages, however, with certain resin mixtures, birch tar or other types of glue (e.g. fish glue). The advantage of a birch bark handle was and is its durability. It does not rot, is grippy even when wet and can be adapted very well to the hand during production. The fundamental oblivion of the craft of birch bark processing in Western Europe made us forget about the virtues of birch bark. In Russia and very well in the Scandinavian countries, there are still a few craftsmen who have mastered these techniques. We are one of the few Western Europeans who were lucky enough to learn this craft: Here are more pictures of finished handles:
