History
Round shields in general were quite popular in every era. Today, these shields are simply called Viking shields and are attributed exclusively to the Vikings. However, this shape was characteristic and common for all European peoples, such as Slavs, Germanic tribes, Scandinavians and Vikings (not a people, but a gathering of like-minded people associated with this shield shape).
A sign was a consumable product. It had to be strong enough to last two fights and be quick and cheap to produce. These round shields fulfilled the stated purpose in the best possible way. This is why they were so widespread in Europe.
Sometimes the shields were only painted, sometimes they were first covered with skin and then painted and sometimes they were simply taken into battle in their natural state.
