Rawhide drumhead for shaman drum
We have decided to make it even easier for you to order cut drumheads. Depending on the size of your drum frame, you can order the right diameter and the corresponding animal for your drum construction here.
Like all our raw hides, they are gently dehaired in a lye solution and dried naturally! No chemicals that attack your skin during processing. No chemical crystals to speed up the drying process.
We have been selling rawhides for over 15 years with your constant satisfaction.
As often asked, we get the rawhides from a family business that is now in its third generation of producing leather and rawhide. The hides are exclusively of German origin!
The highest quality rawhide available for drum making is cowhide! Detailed description below.
Properties of the eardrum
- Diameter: from 40cm to 70cm in 5cm increments
- Animal: wild boar, deer, cattle, horse, goat
- Strengths: Vary depending on the animal and also on the animal. It is a natural product. A uniform thickness over the entire surface is not possible. However, we cut in such a way that the drum head is actually suitable for a drum
- Holes: We cut without holes! The only thing is that there may be a hole at the edge, but this does not reduce the quality. However, the drum surface is guaranteed to be flawless. However, if you notice a very thin spot or even a hole, please make a complaint. We swap!
- Surface: Dehaired! Drumheads with hair are only available to order and only from horses. Also deep-frozen as a whole skin up to 4.5 square meters.
Do you need a larger diameter? E.g. for a “mother drum”? Then get in touch with us via e-mail: info@geschichtshandwerk.de
Drum head Sound characteristics + processing properties
- Venison: juicy, full-sounding – rawhide rather supple.
- Be moderate with the lacing, otherwise you run the risk of it tearing
- Wild boar: sonorous – stubborn and tough.
- Withstands traction well. Rough surface. Looks very rustic. Sometimes soft greasy spots (soak with washing-up liquid to degrease the spots).
- Horse: Deep to dull – Thick, whereby the thickness of the skin varies in places.
- No, we cannot cut exclusively from the back/comb. The costs would be too high otherwise
- Withstands traction and the eardrum is rather supple and smooth
- Beef grain: full-sounding, deep – Smooth and evenly thick
- Beautiful surface and very high quality
- Withstands traction well
- Beef crack: deep to dull – stubborn and rough
- If you need it really rustic, choose Rinderspalt
- Withstands tension very well, mostly thick
- Difficult to process, but good deep sound
- Goat: high and shaky – supple and rather thin
- Goat is usually ordered from us for African drums
- Similar to the Hirsch, although many customers have told us that the sound is rather fluttery
- You have to be careful when lashing. Likes to tear. But if you are a professional, you know how to process goat
Tips
ALWAYS remember to order a larger diameter than the diameter of your frame. Depending on the lashing, you must calculate the diameter of the drum surface + the thickness of the frame bars (if necessary, folded down by 2) + the height of the frame + the overhang of the cover on the back.
We can also give you a rough guide for the lacing. When lashing a 50 – 55 mm Siberian shaman drum with about 5 cm overhang on the back, you need 10-15 m of rawhide cord. This depends very much on how you tie the laces.
We offer a frame in standard size 54cm here
We also cut cords to size. Here
