Origin
This birch bark comes from the northern part of Russia. There they are painstakingly harvested by hand from living trees. Done correctly, it does not harm the tree and the bark grows back after 3-5 years. In this way, a tree can be used several times. Certainly one or the other birch bark plate is also from the felled tree. In contrast to Western European forestry, birch is not only mainly burned and processed into furniture, but also used for carvings and for the extraction of birch bark. Even if you may not believe it, the harvest of birch bark is strictly controlled in Russia (at least where we get it from). The birch has another property…. Not only does it regenerate its bark quickly, but the tree itself also grows under the most adverse conditions and very quickly. Thus, birch bark is a very ecological natural product.
Inside
If you use the inside of the birch bark, i.e. the ochre surface turned towards the tree, you use the special property of the bark. Because the birch leather is antiseptic, incredibly robust, does not mold or rot. Whether as a bow cover, knife or fishing handle, birch tins, bread baskets, our birch bark is beautiful to grip and unique in its structure.
Of course, the white outside must first be peeled off. This means that each craftsman can decide for himself how thick he leaves the birch bark to be processed. You can peel the bark very thinly (for surface finishing, birch bark ribbons for sewing, etc.) or you can leave a little more thickness, which gives the future container more stability.
Outside
Artists, craftsmen and hobbyists can create very beautiful and unique works with our birch bark. The outside of the birch bark is often painted with ink and acrylic. This way you can embed a beautiful picture in a “natural landscape”. Likewise, the birch leather with its black and white contrast refreshes every piece of furniture (more about this in the showroom)
